About Ward: Nunthorpe
Nunthorpe is a small outer suburb and civil parish of the town of Middlesbrough and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. Nunthorpe is served by Nunthorpe and Gypsy Lane railway stations, both of which are on the Esk Valley Line from Middlesbrough to Whitby. The railway line here forms the border between the boroughs of Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland. Nunthorpe civil parish is west of the railway line, in Middlesbrough, whilst the area east of the railway line forms part of the Ormesby ward of Redcar and Cleveland.
The main road through Nunthorpe is Guisborough Road
The original settlement grew up around Nunthorpe Hall, which was first built in the 1620s, although the present building is mostly Victorian. The settlement that is known as Nunthorpe today is that which grew up around the railway station. Nunthorpe village is situated about a mile to the south of the main suburban area.
Nunthorpe has a football club complete with squash and tennis courts; there is also a cricket club. The Cleveland Hills can be seen as the backdrop to this local amenity, with Roseberry Topping clearly visible.
A parade of local shops can be found on Guisborough Road including a florist, pharmacy and post office with local newsagent Rookwood News found on nearby Rookwood Road. The one pub in Nunthorpe is the Brunton Arms on Stainton Way.
In October 2006, plans were drawn up for a road safety scheme on Guisborough road: however these plans were later abandoned.
Famous people from Nunthorpe include Tottenham and England centre-back Jonathan Woodgate, Reading and Scotland Right-Back Graeme Murty, Durham and England fast bowler Liam Plunkett who attended Nunthorpe School, British long jump record holder Chris Tomlinson, television and radio presenter Kirsten O'Brien.
